Parental plan pain

Tony Abbott's paid parental leave plan has certainly upset the apple cart. The scheme would be funded by a 1.7 per cent tax on 3,200 Australian businesses, those that have a taxable income above five million dollars.

This has managed to alienate big business, the Liberal party's core constituency. On the other hand, Tony Abbott has won new friends. Women's groups and some unions like the idea of six months' fully paid leave, up to a cap of $150,000, an improvement on the Rudd government's 18 weeks at the minimum wage.
