Ride to school day

17/03/2010
It's St Patrick's Day with plenty of folk wearing a dash of green here and there. But here's another way to 'go green' today, at least for the kids. It's National Ride to School Day, where students across Australia embrace a healthier start to the day by riding to school. Over 100,000 school children will mark the annual event at their school with healthy breakfasts, all-day cycling festivals, school parades and bike excursions. The idea began in Victoria, before going national.

Preventing obesity: experts call for government to consider a fat tax

26/01/2010

Thirty per cent of kids in Taiwan are obese and if the law is implemented it will be a world first. More than a few health professionals and organisations in Australia are saying it's time we had one too. Professor Mike Daube is the president of the Public Health Association of Australia. He is professor of public health at Curtin University, and deputy chair of Kevin Rudd's Preventative Health taskforce, whose recommendations are currently before the federal government. He wants to see the Australian government investigating taxes on fast food and subsidies for healthy food.
