Deadly jockey falls

Formula one might be a dangerous occupation but driving a vehicle of the four legged variety can sometimes be just as dangerous. One in 620 falls on a horseracing track result in death and the Menzies research Institute in Tasmania wanted to find out why. They've been looking into the risk factors associated with jockey falls and their results may well improve occupational health and safety on the racetrack.

Oil spill wipes out bird life

After a five-day shutdown for Hurricane Alex, efforts to clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill have resumed in Louisiana. And just back in Australia, after a tour of the disaster zone, are two seabird rescue experts. They want to set up an oil response unit here, to focus on emergency environmental aid and see what help Australia can provide in the Gulf region.

There are renewed calls for Victoria's former chief of police Christine Nixon to resign from her role as head of the state's Bushfire Recovery Authority. Christine Nixon returned to the Black Saturday Royal Commission yesterday and faced intense questioning over how she spent the evening of Black Saturday. In evidence given to the commission earlier this month, Christine Nixon admitted she failed to mention that she'd gone out to dinner with friends on the night of Australia's worst natural disaster. It's also been revealed that Christine Nixon did not receive any phone calls or text messages at the height of the fires, between 6 and 9 pm.

The body of Poland's president returns home

The body of Poland's president Lech Kaczynski has arrived back in Poland, as two minutes silence was observed and church services were conducted to honour the 97 dead in Saturday's air crash. The Russian-built jet crashed while taking an official delegation to a memorial service in Katyn, where 22,000 Poles were massacred by Soviet troops in 1940.
