Education in the election

One of the few spending promises in this campaign is a new program of National Trade Cadetships (NTC) for secondary school students. Announced by the PM yesterday, the scheme is worth $3 million over two years and would start in 2012. It's hardly a big splash, especially compared to the $16 billion Building the Education Revolution (BER) school upgrades program. That stimulus spending is one reason why this election will see a modest campaign. Education minister Simon Crean is in charge of both the NTC and the BER.

One goal education

We've spoken often about the Millennium Development Goals, the eight international development goals that all 192 United Nations member states have agreed to achieve by 2015. They include reducing extreme poverty, reducing child mortality rates and fighting disease epidemics such as AIDS. But perhaps the lynchpin goal is that of universal primary education.
