Australia's first Indigenous archer
07/07/2010
While the focus might be on the soccer world cup, today's focus on RN Breakfast is the sport of archery. In Queensland there's one newcomer who's been selected to compete in this year's World Field Archery Championships. She is 47-year-old Susan Thomas. Thomas is the first Indigenous person to represent the country in archery and amazingly she took up the sport only six months ago.
Cyber racism
15/01/2010
A couple of weeks ago an Australian Aboriginal man, Stephen Watt, searched on Google using the words 'Aboriginal' and 'encyclopedia'. One of the first websites he was directed to was Encyclopedia Dramatica. At best the site is satirical but at worst it's overtly racist, certainly in terms of its descriptions of Aboriginal Australians.
Stephen Watt wants Google not to pull down the site itself, but to remove it from the search engine's database. His lawyer, George Newhouse, filed a complaint to the Human Rights Commission yesterday, a few hours before learning that Google has responded to his complaint.
Noel Pearson leads the fight against the Wild Rivers Act
13/01/2010
According to the Queensland government, the pristine rivers of Cape York are among the last of their kind on Earth, and must be preserved at all costs. They've turned the Wild Rivers Act into law and, since 2005, nine rivers have been declared 'wild' and protected from development accordingly.
Federal Liberal leader Tony Abbott wants to strike down the laws, using the Constitution's race powers, but the federal government said late yesterday they will not support his party's private members bill.
