Emily by John Gordon
John Gordon is one of music’s journeymen. His last album, ‘Alive In Bornheim’ was conceived and recorded in that small village, just outside of Frankfurt, Germany. His latest disc is called ‘Souvenir’ and was recorded in John’s hometown of Allora, as well as Stanthorpe, Bardon, McMahon’s Point, Everton Hills, Annerley, East Brisbane, Mermaid Beach, and Frankfurt. Where the ‘Bornheim’ project was like an audio journal of its time and place, it’s successor, ‘Souvenir’ sounds more intimate and quietly revealing. For example, the inspiration for “Emily” was explained online as being, “…a girl I once knew”. The music, meanwhile, is consistently interesting. Despite the many places in which it was recorded ‘Souvenir’ is a surprisingly cohesive collection of songs. Listen to “Emily” as a foretaste of what ‘Souvenir’ and the peripatetic John Gordon are about. Meanwhile, in late breaking news, John recently has been at the new Ng Media Studios in Wingellina, near the NT/SA/WA border, producing a compilation album called ‘Turlku 4’, comprising songs by Indigenous artists from Australia’s Western Desert region. But that is, as they say, another story.
