Ideally, prepare your kit with all the following items, or at least make a list so you will know where to find them quickly in your home.- Battery-operated radio (with spare batteries)
- Torch (with spare batteries), candles and waterproof matches
- Strong shoes, leather gloves, hat, goggles and overalls
- First aid kit and manual, and combination pocket knife
- Medications, toiletry and sanitary supplies and a change of clothes
- Special needs for infants, the aged and people with disabilities
- Water in sealed containers - ten litres per person (for three days)
- Three days supply of canned food (plus can opener and utensils)
- Pet food, water and other animal needs
- Portable stove with fuel
- Tent or tarpaulin, and blankets (woollen and thermal)
- Money, including change for phone calls
- Strong plastic bags (for clothing, valuables, documents, and photographs)

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology New South Wales PRELIMINARY MINOR FLOOD WARNING FOR THE CASTLEREAGH RIVER AT MENDOORAN Issued at 5:26 AM on Saturday the 4th of September 2010 Flood Warning Number: 1 Up to an average of 20 millimetres of rain has fallen during the past 15 hours to 5 am today [4/9/2010].
Further falls are expected over the next 12 hours.
This rain is expected to cause minor flooding at Mendooran this morning.
At this stage it is not possible to predict the flood peak because of uncertainty over how much more rain will fall. Predicted River Heights/Flows: Mendooran - exceed minor flood level (2.4 metres) in the next few hours. FloodSafe advice is available at www.ses.nsw.gov.au For emergency assistance call the SES on telephone number 132 500. For life threatening emergencies, call 000 immediately. Warning to Sheep Graziers for the Snowy Mountains, Riverina, Upper Western, Australian Capital Territory, South Coast, Illawarra, Central West Slopes & Plains, South West Slopes, Hunter, Mid North Coast, Lower Western, Southern Tablelands and Central Tablelands forecast districts.
Issued at 5:08 am EST on Saturday 4 September 2010.
Sheep Graziers are warned that cool to mild temperatures, rain and strong Westerly winds are expected during Saturday and Sunday. Areas likely to be affected include the Riverina, Upper Western, Australian Capital Territory, South Coast, Illawarra, Central West Slopes & Plains, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains, Lower Western, Southern Tablelands and Central Tablelands forecast districts and parts of the Hunter and Mid North Coast forecast districts. There is a high risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.
The next warning will be issued by 11:00 am EST Saturday.

Weather Situation A deep low pressure system over South Australia will move southeast towards Tasmania with winds along the NSW coast becoming strong to gale force today The low will then move quickly into the southern Tasman Sea on Sunday allowing winds to gradually ease.
Gale warning for New South Wales waters between Wooli and Port Stephens Winds: North to northeasterly then tending north to northwesterly and increasing up to 35 to 40 knots later in the day. Combined sea and swell: Increasing up to 5 metres.
Gale warning for New South Wales waters between Port Stephens and Gabo Island Winds: Northeasterly up to 30 knots then tending north to northeasterly and increasing up to 35 to 45 knots during the morning and then tending west to northwesterly. Combined sea and swell: Increasing up to 5 metres.
Strong wind warning for New South Wales waters between Point Danger and Yamba Winds: Northeasterly then tending northerly to 30 knots during the afternoon. Combined sea and swell: Increasing up to 4 metres.
Strong wind warning for New South Wales waters between Yamba and Wooli Winds: North to northeasterly up to 30 knots. Combined sea and swell: Increasing up to 4 metres.

Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds, destructive winds, flash flooding and blizzard conditions for people in the Riverina, Upper Western, Australian Capital Territory, South Coast, Illawarra, Central West Slopes & Plains, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains, Lower Western, Southern Tablelands and Central Tablelands forecast districts.
Issued at 4:53 am EST on Saturday 4 September 2010.
Weather Situation An intense low pressure system just west of Victoria will continue to deepen as it moves east today. Very windy conditions are developing in the west of the NSW and these will extend eastwards during the morning and later today.
Destructive winds averaging 65 km/h with peak gusts around 125 km/h are forecast for the Snowy Mountains forecast district.
Alpine Peaks may experience winds averaging 100 km/h with peak gusts in excess of around 130 km/h
Blizzard conditions are forecast for the Snowy Mountains forecast district as snow showers develop overnight tonight
Damaging winds averaging 65 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are forecast for the Illawarra, South Coast, Australian Capital Territory, Riverina, Lower Western, Southern Tablelands and Central Tablelands forecast districts and parts of the Upper Western, Central West Slopes & Plains and South West Slopes forecast districts.
Heavy rain may lead to flash flooding over parts of the South West Slopes and western parts of the Snowy Mountains forecast district during today.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should: - Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. - Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. - Keep clear of fallen power lines. - Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water. - Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500. The next warning will be issued by 11:00 am EST Saturday.

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology New South Wales FLOOD WATCH FOR SATURDAY IN THE MACQUARIE, BOGAN, LACHLAN, QUEANBEYAN - MOLONGLO AND MURRUMBIDGEE VALLEYS AND UPPER WESTERN NSW Issued at 11:38 AM on Friday the 3rd of September 2010 Note: This Flood Watch is a "heads up" for possible future flooding and is NOT a Flood Warning [see note below]. Areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to increase in the west today as a low pressure system deepens over South Australia. This low is expected to move through western Victoria during Saturday, bringing the potential for windy conditions and heavy rainfall over inland parts of New South Wales. Forecast rain totals can be seen on the Bureau's Internet site under Water and the Land.
The area is generally wet from recent rain and the following areas have a higher than 70% chance of local flooding and minor to moderate main river flooding this Saturday:
1. Macquarie Valley - including Bathurst, Orange, Molong and the Bell River 2. Bogan Valley 3. Lachlan Valley - including the Belubula River and Mandagery Creek 4. Queanbeyan and Molonglo Rivers 5. Murrumbidgee Valley - most likely local flooding with a chance of main river flooding 6. Upper Western NSW - local flooding from heavy rain expected in the Bourke - Wilcannia - Tibooburra area
This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop. Flood Warnings will be issued if Minor Flood Level is expected to be exceeded at key sites along the main rivers for which the Bureau of Meteorology provides a flood warning service. Across NSW, about 70% of Flood Watches are followed by flooding.
